About us

MareCalmo grew out of a simple question we ask ourselves every summer morning: where can I find the calmest sea today?

The project

Italy's coasts are long and very different from one another: the Adriatic and the Ionian, the Tyrrhenian, the Ligurian Sea, the Sardinian Sea and the Strait of Sicily, the sheltered bays and the exposed stretches, the rocky shores and the sandy beaches. The same windy day that makes one side unusable leaves another completely flat. MareCalmo gathers marine weather forecasts for hundreds of locations and turns them into something immediate: where it's worth going today, based on what you want to do. We cover every Italian coast, from Friuli-Venezia Giulia to Liguria, islands included.

Sign-up optional, nothing to install (although you can add the app to your Home screen like a regular app). Open it, look at the map or the ranking, choose.

How it works, in brief

Want to understand what the numbers mean? Read the Guide.

Where the data comes from

MareCalmo does not own a sensor network: it processes high-quality open data.

The processing, the bathing-suitability indices, the criteria for each activity and the texts are developed specifically for MareCalmo.

Transparency and limits

The forecasts give an excellent overall indication for each beach, also accounting for its exposure to the waves, but they do not replace the ordinances of the Harbour Master's Office or direct observation of the conditions. Details in the Terms of Service.
