About us
MareCalmo grew out of a simple question we ask ourselves every summer morning: where can I find the calmest sea today?
The project
The Apulian coasts are long and very different from one another: the Ionian and the Adriatic, the sheltered bays and the exposed stretches, the rocky shores and the sandy beaches. The same day of mistral wind that makes one side unusable leaves another completely flat. MareCalmo gathers marine weather forecasts for hundreds of locations and turns them into something immediate: where it's worth going today, based on what you want to do.
No sign-up needed, nothing to install (although you can add the app to your Home screen like a regular app). Open it, look at the map or the ranking, choose.
How it works, in brief
- For each location we calculate the sea state with five simple levels (from Flat to Very rough), together with wind, water temperature, UV index and chance of rain.
- You can pick an activity - swimming, relaxing, snorkelling, SUP, kayaking, boating, surfing, wind - and the app ranks the locations by how suitable they are for that activity today.
- The forecasts cover today and the following days, so you can plan ahead.
Want to understand what the numbers mean? Read the Guide.
Where the data comes from
MareCalmo does not own a sensor network: it processes high-quality open data.
- Weather and marine forecasts: Open-Meteo, under the Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 licence.
- Maps and locations: OpenStreetMap and its contributors.
The processing, the bathing-suitability indices, the criteria for each activity and the texts are developed specifically for MareCalmo.
