From the seafront beneath the Rocca to the sheltered coves of the Porto Vecchio and Mazzaforno, and the windy sands of Capo Playa, each with up-to-date sea conditions.
Cefalù is one of Sicily's best-known postcards: the medieval town squeezed between the sea and the Rocca, the Norman cathedral and a long golden-sand beach that starts right at the old town. The coast here faces north and northwest, and that orientation decides when the sea is calm and when it picks up.
Around the centre, to the east and west, pebble coves open up among the cliffs alongside wide, windy stretches of sand: each has a different exposure, so there is almost always a sheltered spot. Below are the most beautiful public beaches, each with today's sea conditions: tap a row to open the full card with waves, wind and water temperature.
The town beach and the Porto Vecchio
The Cefalù seafront is the city's bathing heart: convenient, well served and a few steps from the old town. Not far away, a hidden cove stays calm even when the seafront catches the wind.
The large seafront beach, fine golden sand and a shallow seabed close to the old town, with the Rocca in the background. It faces north, so it is calmer with southerly winds and picks up with the tramontana and the mistral.
The small sandy cove of the old marina, in the historic centre, sheltered by the jetty. For that very reason it is usually calm and tucked away, a good choice when the seafront is hit by the wind.
To the west: Mazzaforno, Settefrati and Capo Playa
Leaving the centre to the west, the coast opens up: first the sheltered coves of Mazzaforno, then the large sandy beaches, windy and loved by windsurfers.
A series of coves of sand mixed with pebbles in a deep, well-sheltered bay, west of the centre. Its enclosed shape protects it from the winds, so the sea often stays calm.
Towards Capo Playa, a wide and very windy stretch of sand, also used for windsurfing. Precisely because it is open to the west, it is more exposed to the mistral and the tramontana: excellent with little wind, best avoided on windy days if you want flat water.
To the east: Caldura and Sant'Ambrogio
On the opposite side of the headland, to the east, the scenery changes again: first a pebble cove among the dark cliffs, then quieter, less crowded beaches.
A beach of sand mixed with pebbles, mostly free and not crowded, along the coast east of Cefalù. A good alternative when the central beaches are full.
When the sea is calm in Cefalù
The Cefalù coast faces north and northwest, so it moves with the tramontana, the grecale and the mistral and calms down with southerly winds. The practical rule: when the wind blows from the north the seafront beach turns choppy, and it is worth heading for the sheltered inlets such as the Porto Vecchio, in the centre, or the coves of Mazzaforno to the west; with a southerly wind, instead, even the large open beaches turn quiet again. MareCalmo takes into account each beach's exposure to wind and waves, so you can see at a glance where the sea is calmest today.
Practical tips
- Go early. In the morning the sea is usually calmer, before the breeze picks up, and parking is easier to find.
- Switch sides with the wind. If the seafront is rough, try the sheltered coves; the beaches open to the west are at their best only with little wind.
- Water shoes for the pebble coves. At Caldura and partly at Mazzaforno the seabed is stony.
- Check flags and ordinances. The municipality's and the Harbour Master's notices always come before the forecast.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the most beautiful beach in Cefalù?
The seafront beach, with the Rocca in the background, is the most famous, but there is no single most beautiful beach: there is the most beautiful one today. With the tramontana the seafront turns choppy, while sheltered coves such as the Porto Vecchio stay calm. That is why it is worth checking the sea conditions before you set off.
Are the Cefalù beaches free?
Yes, there are wide free stretches both on the seafront and on the beaches outside the centre, alongside equipped lidos. Along the stretch towards the harbour there may be temporary bathing bans: it is best to check the notices.
When is the sea calmest?
Usually early in the morning and, with a tramontana or mistral, in the sheltered inlets such as the Porto Vecchio and Mazzaforno. The calm sea today page shows you in real time where to find it now.
