Calm sea on the Costa dei Trabocchi today: the most peaceful beaches

The ancient stilt-borne fishing machines give their name to the most beautiful stretch of the Abruzzo Adriatic: pebble coves, sandy beaches and the Via Verde running along the old railway line.

The Costa dei Trabocchi

The coast of the province of Chieti takes its name from the trabocchi, wooden fishing machines on stilts stretched out over the sea: the densest stretch counts more than twenty, and many today are restaurants where you eat above the water. From Ortona to Vasto the beaches alternate wide sand and pebble coves squeezed between rocks and Mediterranean scrub, with the villages of San Vito Chietino and Fossacesia halfway along. The Via Verde, a cycle path built on the disused Adriatic railway, runs the whole shoreline almost dead flat.

When the sea is calm on the Costa dei Trabocchi

The coast faces north-east: the bora and the grecale come in from the open sea and raise the waves, and the sirocco stirs the water too, as everywhere on the Adriatic. The garbino, the warm south-westerly wind that is at home here in Abruzzo, blows off the land instead: close to shore the water flattens out, although its arrival often heralds a change in the weather. The coves between the rocks hide some better-protected corners; in the morning, before the breeze, the sea is usually at its smoothest.
