Calm sea between Lignano and Grado today: the most peaceful beaches

Lignano's sandy peninsula on one side, the «Island of the Sun» on the other, and in between the lagoon with the fishermen's casoni: Friuli's sea is wide, shallow and turned to the south.

The coast between Lignano and Grado

Lignano Sabbiadoro occupies a peninsula of about eight kilometres between the mouth of the Tagliamento, the Marano lagoon and the Adriatic: golden sand, a thick pine wood behind and a seabed that slopes ever so gently, perfect with children. Beyond the lagoon, dotted with islands and casoni, lies Grado, the «Island of the Sun»: a historic centre of alleys around the basilica of Sant'Eufemia, a tradition of sand cures and thalassotherapy born in the nineteenth century, and some ten kilometres of beaches facing almost all due south, a rarity in the upper Adriatic.

When the sea is calm between Lignano and Grado

On these south-facing beaches it is the sirocco, sweeping up the Adriatic, that raises the waves. The bora, which comes down from the north-east here, brings gusts that can be strong but arrive off the land or side-on: you feel the wind, the waves in front of the beach much less. With northerly and westerly winds the water stays smooth, and the shallow seabed does the rest. In summer the morning, before the breeze, is usually the smoothest moment.
