Calm sea between Tropea and Capo Vaticano today: the most peaceful beaches

The coast between Tropea and Capo Vaticano

The «horn of Calabria» facing the Tyrrhenian alternates long white beaches and jagged rocks that draw small bays. Beneath the crag of Tropea, crowned by the sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola, open the beaches of the «Pearl of the Tyrrhenian»; to the south-west the promontory of Capo Vaticano hides the bay of Grotticelle, a kilometre of inlets gathered in a natural basin. On clear days the view reaches the Aeolian Islands, some thirty nautical miles away.

When the sea is calm between Tropea and Capo Vaticano

The coast faces north-west and is ventilated above all by the maestrale (the mistral): it is that wind, together with the ponente, that raises the waves when it comes in from the open sea. The sirocco and the levante blow off the land instead and leave the water transparent close to shore. The coves enclosed between the rocks, like those of Grotticelle, often offer a sheltered corner even when the sea outside is moving. Early in the morning the sea is usually at its smoothest.
