The Versilia coast
The Versilia shoreline runs straight from Forte dei Marmi to Viareggio, through Marina di Pietrasanta and Lido di Camaiore: fine sand, wide well-equipped beaches, with beach clubs that have been an institution here since the boom years. To the south, between Viareggio and Torre del Lago, the Lecciona preserves a natural stretch with dunes. In the background stand the Apuan Alps, with the white cuts of the marble quarries on their ridges.
When the sea is calm in Versilia
The coast faces south-west, and it is from the libeccio (the south-west wind) that the biggest storms of the whole Tuscan coast arrive: when it blows hard from the south-west or west, the waves build along the entire shoreline. The grecale and the levante, from the north-east and east, blow down off the land instead and leave the sea smooth close to shore. In summer the breeze matters most: quiet mornings, livelier afternoons, with the water usually settling again towards evening.
