The coast between Cervia and Cesenatico
Milano Marittima was born in 1912 as a garden city inside Cervia's pine forest, and greenery is still the mark of this shoreline: the pines follow the beach down to Pinarella, while behind Cervia lie the salt pans, the southern gateway of the Po Delta Park and a stopover for flamingos and wetland birds. In Cesenatico the fourteenth-century canal port, which Leonardo da Vinci drew in his notebooks in 1502, hosts the historic boats of the Maritime Museum; the sandy beaches continue towards Villamarina and Gatteo a Mare. Shallow, gently sloping seabeds along the whole stretch.
When the sea is calm between Cervia and Cesenatico
Here too the coast faces north-east: the waves build with the bora and the sirocco, while the garbino, the warm south-westerly wind that blows off the land, leaves the water smooth close to shore. The average swell on this stretch of the Adriatic is moderate: the difficult days are those with wind from the eastern quadrant. In summer, between the night-time land breeze and the afternoon sea breeze, the first hours of the day are usually the calmest.
