Last update: 29 July, 18:00

Monte Conero is «Italy's elbow»: the only rocky stretch between Trieste and the Gargano, with white cliffs, pale pebbles and the Due Sorelle as its symbol. Below, Sirolo and Numana.

The Conero coast

The Conero promontory rises to 572 metres and falls into the sea with white walls: it is the most important coastal relief of the Adriatic after the Gargano, its rock breaking the long sandy shoreline. Inside the regional park open the bay of Portonovo, with its small coastal lakes, and the pebble and gravel beaches of San Michele and Urbani below Sirolo; the Due Sorelle beach, symbol of the park, is reached by boat or along the trail that bears its name. South of the promontory the coast turns gentle again towards Numana.

When the sea is calm on the Conero

The promontory's coast faces between north-east and east: the bora and the grecale hit it head-on and the sirocco raises the waves too, as everywhere on the Adriatic. The garbino, the warm south-westerly wind, blows down off the land instead and flattens the sea beneath the cliffs. The promontory exposes different flanks: when one side is beaten, the other often offers more shelter. In the morning, before the breeze, the white pebbles usually give the clearest water.
