The coast between Sperlonga and Gaeta
Sperlonga, one of Italy's most beautiful villages, sits perched on its spur with sandy beaches at its feet; just to the south, the Grotto of Tiberius held the sculptural groups of the Odyssey brought back to light in 1957. Towards Gaeta the Riviera di Ulisse alternates cliffs and coves often reachable only from the sea, down to the town's beaches: Serapo, a kilometre and a half of sand up to seventy metres wide, and the long bay of Sant'Agostino beneath walls dear to climbers. Closing the stretch, the Montagna Spaccata at the foot of Monte Orlando.
When the sea is calm between Sperlonga and Gaeta
The coast faces south and west: the libeccio (south-west wind) and the sirocco are the winds that bring the waves, while the tramontana blows down off the land and smooths the sea close to shore, often leaving clear water and crisp skies. The gulf of Gaeta and the stretches below the cliffs give some extra shelter depending on where the wind blows from. In the morning, before the breeze picks up, the sea is usually at its calmest.
