Calm sea between Alassio and Laigueglia today: the most peaceful beaches

Almost four kilometres of fine sand in a bay protected between two capes, with the Gallinara island in front: Alassio and Laigueglia are the gentlest stretch of the western Riviera, where you can wade for a long way.

The coast between Alassio and Laigueglia

The bay of Alassio stretches for about 3,700 metres of fine pale sand, with a seabed that slopes gently: a rarity in Liguria, where rock dominates. Behind it runs the «budello», the shopping lane, with the famous Muretto of celebrity tiles; to the west the fishing village of Laigueglia closes the bay under Capo Mele. In front lies Gallinara island, once home to a Benedictine monastery. The mountains behind shield the basin from northerly winds.

When the sea is calm between Alassio and Laigueglia

The bay faces south-east and is enclosed between Capo Santa Croce and Capo Mele: the two headlands partly defend it from the libeccio, the wind that brings the Riviera's most serious storms, while the sirocco and southerly winds come in more directly and raise the waves on the sand. With the tramontana and winds off the land the water turns flat and transparent again. The gentle seabed still makes this one of the area's most manageable beaches even with a lively sea.
