The Cinque Terre coast
Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore sit on a steep, rocky coast, a UNESCO site since 1997, protected by a marine area (1998) and by the National Park (1999). Real beaches are few: the largest are at Monterosso, with the fine gravel of Fegina, while the other villages offer pebble coves and smooth rocks. The Via dell'Amore links Riomaggiore and Manarola high above the sea; just outside the park, the area also takes in Levanto and Bonassola.
When the sea is calm in the Cinque Terre
The coast faces south-west, towards the open Ligurian Sea: it is the southerly winds that bring the waves, and when the sea builds the coves squeezed between the rocks quickly become unusable. With the tramontana, blowing down off the land beyond the ridges, the water close to shore stays smooth and clear instead. On a rocky coast even a modest wave makes itself felt: early morning is usually the quietest time for a swim.
