Calm sea between Camogli and Chiavari today: the most peaceful beaches

The Portofino promontory divides two gulfs: Camogli and San Fruttuoso on one side, the Piazzetta, Paraggi and the Tigullio on the other. Gravel coves, deep water and a sea that can change face quickly.

The coast between Camogli and Chiavari

The Monte di Portofino, a natural park with its marine protected area, marks the border between Camogli's Golfo Paradiso and the Gulf of Tigullio of Santa Margherita, Rapallo, Zoagli and Chiavari. On the western flank hides San Fruttuoso, the bay with the abbey reachable only on foot or by sea; on the eastern one, the cove of Paraggi and the village of Portofino with its Piazzetta. The beaches are mostly gravel and pebbles, squeezed between cliffs and scrub.

When the sea is calm between Camogli and Chiavari

Here too the waves come with the southerly winds: the storm of October 2018, which destroyed the road to Portofino and three hundred metres of Rapallo's breakwater, remains the reminder of how high this sea can rise. In normal conditions the tramontana off the land leaves the gulfs smooth, and the promontory almost always offers a more sheltered flank: when the Tigullio is rough it is worth looking at the Camogli side, and vice versa. In summer the breeze rules: quiet mornings, rippled afternoons.
