Calm sea on the Amalfi Coast today: the most peaceful beaches

Cliffs plunging into the Gulf of Salerno, villages squeezed into the mouths of the ravines and coves often reachable only by sea: the Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO site since 1997, is the most celebrated shoreline of the Tyrrhenian, and here it pays to check the sea before picking your cove.

The coast from Positano to Vietri

From Positano to Vietri sul Mare the Coast runs for about fifteen nautical miles beneath the Lattari Mountains: limestone walls, villages such as Amalfi, Atrani and Cetara gathered where the ravines meet the sea, and a string of coves and small beaches wedged between the rocks, many reachable only by boat or down long flights of steps. Among the landmarks are the Fiordo di Furore and the Emerald Grotto of Conca dei Marini.

When the sea is calm on the Amalfi Coast

The Coast faces south, onto the Gulf of Salerno: the sirocco and the libeccio (the south-west wind) are the winds that raise the waves, and when they blow hard it is difficult to find shelter anywhere along the stretch. From northerly winds the coast is protected by the Lattari Mountains, although in the afternoon cool gusts can tumble down from them towards the sea. In summer the breeze regime rules: mornings are usually quiet, afternoons livelier.
