Calm sea between Palinuro and Marina di Camerota today: the most peaceful beaches

Capo Palinuro pushes some two kilometres out to sea in cliffs and caves; beyond Marina di Camerota, the Infreschi coast hides some of Italy's most awarded coves.

The coast between Palinuro and Marina di Camerota

The promontory of Capo Palinuro, between the gulf of Velia and the gulf of Policastro, is a limestone bastion dropping steeply into the water, carved with sea caves such as the Blue Grotto and pierced by the Natural Arch; on its crags grows a primrose found nowhere else in the world. At the foot of the cape lies the Buon Dormire beach; past Marina di Camerota the coast enters the Infreschi and Masseta Marine Protected Area, with Cala Bianca, covered in pale pebbles, and the Baia degli Infreschi, a natural harbour where freshwater springs flow straight into the sea.

When the sea is calm between Palinuro and Camerota

The cape exposes its flanks in very different directions: when one side is beaten by the waves, rounding the point you will often find a more sheltered one. In general it is the westerly winds, libeccio, ponente and maestrale, that come in from the open Tyrrhenian and stir the sea, while with winds off the land the bays stay smooth. The coves of the Infreschi, squeezed between the walls, are among the best-known natural shelters of the area.
