Calm sea in the Cilento today: the most peaceful beaches

Between Agropoli and Acciaroli the Cilento alternates sandy bays, low rocky shores and headlands covered in Mediterranean scrub: a wilder, quieter coast than the Amalfi one, with a marine protected area at its heart.

The Cilento coast between Agropoli and Acciaroli

South of Trentova Bay, at the gates of Agropoli, begins the Santa Maria di Castellabate Marine Protected Area, which follows the coast down to Punta Licosa: posidonia seabeds, stretches under full protection and the islet that legend links to the siren Leucosia. Further south open the beaches of San Marco and Ogliastro and the fishing village of Acciaroli, in the municipality of Pollica. Sand and rock alternate along the whole stretch.

When the sea is calm in the Cilento

This coast faces west, towards the open Tyrrhenian: the libeccio (south-west wind), the ponente (west wind) and the maestrale (mistral) come in from the open sea and raise the waves, while the easterly winds blow down off the land and leave the water smooth close to shore. The more enclosed inlets, such as Trentova, and the sheltered sides of Punta Licosa often offer a lee when the wind turns. In the morning, before the breeze, the sea is usually at its quietest.
