Calm sea in the Gulf of Orosei today: the most peaceful beaches

The Supramonte plunging into the sea along forty kilometres of limestone cliffs: the Gulf of Orosei is the coast of coves reached by boat or on foot, with Cala Gonone as its gateway.

The coast of the Gulf of Orosei

South of Cala Gonone the Supramonte mountains drop straight into the sea: limestone walls, holm oaks and a rosary of coves opening between the rocks, almost all reachable only by boat or on long trails. Cala Luna is the most famous, a crescent of pale sand eight hundred metres long enclosed by the walls; Cala Fuili, of pebbles and fine gravel, is the closest to town and a favourite with climbers. At the Grotta del Bue Marino, a cave system running for kilometres, the monk seal was sighted until the 1980s.

When the sea is calm in the Gulf of Orosei

Sardinia's east coast is the one the maestrale touches least: the island's dominant wind comes down off the land here, and the gulf often stays sailable while the west coast is in a storm. The waves arrive instead with the grecale, the levante and the sirocco, the winds of the eastern quadrant: on those days the coves squeezed between the walls lose their calm and landings get tricky. For boat trips, early morning is usually the best moment.
