Calm sea on the Costa Smeralda today: the most peaceful beaches

Wind-sculpted granite, Mediterranean scrub and inlets of green water: the Costa Smeralda, born in 1962 around Porto Cervo, remains the most celebrated stretch of the Gallura.

The coast from Porto Cervo to the gulf of Cugnana

The shoreline of the Consortium founded by the Aga Khan in 1962 runs for some fifty kilometres from Capo Ferro towards the gulf of Cugnana: granite rocks, deep inlets and small nestled beaches, with Porto Cervo at the centre and the resorts of Romazzino, Capriccioli, Cala di Volpe and Liscia di Vacca all around. The beaches are often short arcs of pale sand enclosed by the rocks, comfortable but never huge.

When the sea is calm on the Costa Smeralda

The maestrale (mistral), Sardinia's dominant wind, crosses the Gallura and arrives strong but off the land or side-on: you feel the gusts, yet the waves close to shore usually stay smaller than on the island's west side. What really stirs the sea on these east-facing inlets are the grecale, the levante and the sirocco. On windless mornings the coves between the granites flatten out quickly.
