On the Ionian side Gallipoli offers fine white sand and a sea with emerald-green reflections: Baia Verde, Punta della Suina and the dunes of the coast south of the town.

The Gallipoli coast
South of the old town open up Baia Verde, with pale sand and low dunes, and Punta della Suina, a bay set within the Punta Pizzo Park among Mediterranean scrub and Aleppo pines. To the north, at Lido Conchiglie, the coast turns rocky but stays accessible as far as the Montagna Spaccata, a favourite with divers. Along the southern shore, fine sand and gentle seabeds prevail.
When the sea is calm in Gallipoli
The Ionian coast faces west: the winds from the west and south-west — ponente, libeccio (the south-west wind) and maestrale (mistral) — raise the swell, while with tramontana, levante and sirocco, which blow off the land, the beaches south of Gallipoli such as Baia Verde and Punta della Suina stay calm and crystal-clear. It is often the right choice when the Adriatic is rough.
