Calm sea between Bari and Polignano today: the most peaceful beaches

Last update: 19 June, 12:00

South of Bari the Adriatic becomes a coast of low limestone rock, with Polignano a Mare perched on the cliff: little sand, deep water and crystal clarity right up to the rocks.

The coast between Bari and Polignano

The icon is Lama Monachile, the inlet of white pebbles wedged between two rock walls in the heart of Polignano, with deep water from the very first metres. All around runs a succession of coves and sea caves carved out by the waves. This is a sea for those who love to swim and dive, rather than for shallow water for children.

When the sea is calm between Bari and Polignano

The coast faces east, towards the open sea: the easterly winds — levante (the east wind), grecale (the north-east wind) and sirocco — ruffle it at once, while with maestrale (mistral) and ponente, which blow off the land, the water stays flat and wonderfully clear. With deep water close to shore, here the swell makes itself felt sooner than on low, sandy beaches.
