Leuca is the very tip of Italy's heel: the promontory where, by tradition, the Adriatic meets the Ionian, among cliffs riddled with dozens of sea caves.

The coast of Santa Maria di Leuca
Marina di Leuca stretches between Punta Mèliso, at the foot of the sanctuary, and Punta Ristola, the southernmost point of Salento. The coast is mostly high rock and coves, carved out by some sixty caves — the Grotta del Diavolo, dei Giganti, del Drago — many reachable only by sea. It is a deep, clear sea, more for the rocks than for the beach.
When the sea is calm in Santa Maria di Leuca
Lying on the headland between two seas, Leuca can take wind from almost any direction: but that is precisely its good fortune, because when one side is being beaten by the waves it is usually enough to round the cape to find the sheltered side again. With the westerly winds the Ionian flank is covered; with the easterly ones, the Adriatic flank.
