The Porto Cesareo coast
The Marine Protected Area safeguards the shoreline from Punta Prosciutto to Torre Inserraglio: shallow sandy seabeds, the Isola dei Conigli (or Isola Grande) facing the town and the submerged Roman columns you can spot while snorkelling. Punta Prosciutto, with its tall dunes and very fine sand, rounds off to the north one of the most beautiful stretches of the Ionian. Shallow, calm water, perfect for families.
When the sea is calm in Porto Cesareo
Here too the coast faces west: ponente, libeccio (the south-west wind) and maestrale (mistral) raise the swell, but the shallow bay and the Isola Grande in front provide a natural shelter that dampens the motion. With the offshore winds — from the east and south-east — the sandy seabeds turn flat and clear again. When the sirocco blows and the Adriatic is churned up, here you are usually fine.
