Calm sea in Gargano today: the most peaceful beaches

Last update: 19 June, 12:00

The Spur of Italy boasts the most spectacular coastline on the Adriatic: sheer limestone cliffs, sea stacks and coves set into the rock. It is also the most exposed stretch, so here it always pays to check today's sea before you set off.

The Gargano coast

Between Mattinata and Vieste lie famous bays such as Vignanotica, with its white shingle beneath the cliff, and the Baia delle Zagare, with its two sea stacks just offshore. Many coves can be reached only by boat or down long flights of steps: stunning, but with deep water right off the shore, better suited to swimming and diving than to shallow paddling.

When the sea is calm in Gargano

The promontory juts out into the Adriatic and offers several sides facing in different directions: with sirocco (from the south-east) or tramontana (the north wind) the sea quickly builds up on the seaward-facing sides, while the offshore winds blowing off the land — maestrale (mistral) and ponente (the west wind) — flatten the sheltered bays, often those on the Mattinata side. Early in the morning, before the breeze picks up, is usually the calmest moment.
